Garden and boundary walls take a hammering and get almost no attention until something goes wrong. They hold back soil, take the full force of the weather on both sides, and often carry nothing but their own weight on shallow old foundations. So when one starts leaning, bulging or cracking, it is worth sorting sooner rather than later, because a wall coming down is a real safety risk and it is your responsibility if it is on your boundary.
Why boundary walls fail
Most of the walls we get called out to have failed for one of a handful of reasons.
- Shallow or non existent foundations, common on older walls, so the wall shifts as the ground moves - Worn out pointing letting water in, then frost breaking the joints apart over the winters - No coping or a broken coping on top, so rain soaks straight down into the wall - Ground pressure behind a wall that is holding back soil but was never built to do it - Tree roots or a leaning fence post slowly pushing the wall over - A car reversing into it, which we see more often than you would think
Repair or rebuild
This is the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is it depends on what we find when we look. Plenty of walls can be saved. If the foundation is sound and the problem is worn pointing or a bit of frost damage near the top, we can repoint it, replace the damaged bricks and put a proper coping on to keep the water out. That is a repair, and it is the cheaper route when the wall deserves it.
But there is a point where repair is throwing good money after bad. If a wall is leaning noticeably, bulging in the middle, or the foundation has gone, patching it up just delays the inevitable and it will keep moving. In that case a rebuild is the sensible spend. We take it down, sort a proper foundation, and rebuild it to actually last, with the right coping and movement joints where they are needed. It costs more up front but you are not paying for the same wall twice.
What a proper rebuild involves
A wall built to last is not just bricks stacked back up. We dig down to a solid, level foundation and pour concrete footings sized for the height of the wall. Where a wall is retaining soil we build in the right thickness, and we allow for water to drain away behind it rather than build up and push the wall over. A coping on top sheds the rain, and the pointing is done to match and to seal the joints. Get those bits right and a boundary wall will stand for generations.
